Why are spin offs typically terrible? The word itself has a negative connotation, epitomizing our notion of â€Å"too much of a good thing is in fact bad.† Everyone loved â€Å"Friends†, certainly, â€Å"Joey† will be a huge hit. Perhaps we feel that bit of nostalgia that brings back good memories of the original show, but for the most time we are left with the feeling that something is just a bit off, and it makes us uncomfortable. Just like your father cannot relive the glory days of his college years when he visits for his 25 year reunion, TV producers cannot recreate the audience enthusiasm using the same gags, gimmicks, and plotlines from the previous show in their spin off. So rightfully, you could imagine the hesitation that was met with the†¦show more content†¦We fantasize at the thought of changing everything about ourselves and taking on a new life, but fear leaving that old life behind. Gilligan created that scenario for us in Breaking Bad, a nd we couldn’t help but watch. Better Call Saul follows this theme of ambiguous identity, however in a much different way. Unlike Breaking Bad, we are not troubled with predicting the final fate of the main character; we learn in the first episode that Saul Goodman is really Jimmy McGill, who will finally become the timid and terrified Cinnabon manager who goes by the name â€Å"Gene.† It took years to witness the full identity transformation of Walt to Heisenberg, and right in the first episode, we find our main character with three separate identities. Who is this man, and what absurd circumstances bring him to his deplorable end as a lowly mall manager? There is no shortage of unanswered questions left for the audience following the first few episodes, leaving us desperate to quench our knowledge. The mystery and intrigue in Breaking Bad does not match that of Better Call Saul, which smartly employs flashbacks that reveal tidbits of information or foreshadow future events, giving the audience an intimate look into the life of the future Saul Goodman.
