Amy Tans The Kitchen Gods Wife Essay -- Kitchen

Amy Tans The Kitchen Gods Wife Amy Tans The Kitchen Gods Wife is the account of a relationship amidst a mother and daughter that is much more than it seems. This touchingly beautiful narrative not only tells a story, but deals with many of the issues that we live discussed in Women Writers this semester. Tan addresses the issues of the inequality given women in other cultures, different cultures expectations of women, abortion, friendship, generation gaps between mothers and daughters, mother-daughter relationships, and the strength of women in the face of adversity. Tan even sets the feminist vagary with the title of the book, which refers to a woman in Chinese Mythology who cared for a selfish man who became a minor god. She pulls from her own life experiences, relatives, and emotions to write this story, a calculate that probably contributes to the realness of the plot and the roundness of the characters. Tans mothers previous marriage to an abusive man, her fat hers death, and her loving relationship with her relatives (specifically her mother) all show themselves in the intricately woven story of a mother named Winnie, and a daughter named Pearl, and their struggles as Chinese-American women. Much of this story stems from Tans love for her own mother, Daisy Ching, who gave birth to the brilliant Amy in 1952 in California. Daisy Ching, a spectacular inspiration for this novel, has a vividly detailed recollection of her life in China which she shares with her daughter. Tan, in turn, shares some of this with her readers in The Kitchen Gods Wife through the voice of the mother-figure, Winnie. uniform Daisy Chings eldest son (Amy Tans brother), the main character, Winnie, experiences the de... ...rength will preserve her memories forever. Tan teaches her readers that women have the strength, despite the fact that society has said otherwise, to overcome all obstacles. She also shows the dreary plights of our predecessors who h ave committed sins out of love in their oppressed existence. With the love of a mother and a daughter, both real and imaginary, Amy Tan demonstrates these three things (and more) that we have discussed this semester womens strength in the face of adversity, the idea that taking a life is better than giving a bad one, and the incorporation of ones own experiences into writing. Tan has scripted a beautiful piece of literature worthy of being read by men and women alike. Works Cited 1. Tan, Amy. The Kitchen Gods Wife. Schizophrenia Essay -- Schizophrenia Essays

During the 1950s, mentally disordered people who were prejudicial to societyand themselves could be treated with medications and were able to return safelyto their communities. During the 1980s, the cost of health care increased morethan any other cost in our national economy. As a result, strategic planninghas been make to reduce costs. The political decision made todeinstitutionalize chronic mental patients started with the appearance ofphenothiazine medications. Dramatically reducing the instability influenced bypsychosis, these medications were of great significance to legion(predicate) individuals withserious mental disorders. At both the state and federal levels, legislatorslooked at the high cost of long-term psychiatric hospitalization. Socialscientists guaranteed them that community-based care would be in the bestinterests of all concerned the mentally ill and the general, tax-paying public(Barry 13). It was believed that a companionable breakdown syndrome would develop i nchronically mentally ill persons who were institutionalized. Thecharacteristics of this syndrome were first appearance to authority, withdrawal, lackof initiative, and excessive dependence on the institution. While deinstitutionalization was kindhearted in its primary logic, theactual execution of the concept has been greatly undermined by the lack of pricycommunity alternatives. At this time a large amount of the individuals usingcommunity mental health treatment services are the homeless. Nearly half of thehomeless are chronically mental ill. These individuals are often separated fromtheir families and all alone on the dangerous street. These homelessschizophrenics stay away from social structures such as community healthtreatment centers. Since they start a new life of independence they often stoptaking their medications, become psycho and out of place, and begin to liveon the street. Since the schizophrenics are deinstitutionalized they are throwninto a whole new world of in dependence. Since their brain functions differentthan the usual charitable being they cant cope with the problems of life. Theschizophrenics drive themselves crazy wanting to kill themselves and others inorder to escape from this perplexing world.Schizophrenia is the most common psychoses i... ...around because states are mop up their mental institutes for financial reasons. Even though the cost ofmental institutes are high, the schizophrenics are better off being kept in thembecause they could cause a huge uproar on the streets. Without the mentalinstitutes the schizophrenics will get worse because they are unable to liveindependently. Many schizophrenics might even be harmful to society becausetheir brain is out of control. The paranoid schizophrenics could go on arampage and try to kill everyone in sight because they think that everyone isout to attenuated them. This could be the future of our world if we dont take timeto treat these schizophrenics who desperately need it no m atter what the cost.Works Cited Barry, Patricia D. Benefits of Breastfeeding Essay -- Parenting Raising Children

Benefits of BreastfeedingMothers milk is the best food for thought likely for the newborn baby. Breast milk works as an all in one nutritional supplement. Breast milk works as a smart quencher, medication, food supplement and for the mother it works as a weight loss program with no equal. Although, there are formulas that can be employ for replacing breast milk, they do not have the same supplements as the natural milk from the mother. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies be breast-fed for vi to 12 months. The only acceptable alternative to breast milk is infant formula. (Williams, 1995). Breast milk is a perfect combination of nutrients and antibodies for an infants luxuriant growing system. Breast milk is made up of fatty acids, water, lactose, and antibodies. The antibodies in breast milk help the baby fight off many illnesses deep down their environments as well as help them build their own immune systems. Without these antibodies babies tend to get s icker more often, and it can take the babies longer to recover from these illnesses. Since the food is coming directly from the breast rather then a bottle, there is less likely a chance of bacterial infection that can bugger off from a bottle not having been properly sterilized. One of the great benefits of breastfeeding for mothers is the ability to loose the extra weight gained quicker. Urban Ministry: the Kingdom of God Response

From the section Did I really give voice that? Tell us you made it, Zack. Be our example of a rich man who broke free from the grasp of greed. Tell us you won the struggle with mammon and abandoned yourself to the messiah who touched you. Tell us, Zack, that we can be liberated from the power of privilege. This paragraph is really powerful to me. Even though compared to some people analogous celebrities and such, we may not seem so rich, but overall, we live a life of abundance. We are constantly striving to achieve more in life too, same what we have is never enough. And for the most part, the things we strive for really dont benefit us spiritually. When you think round it, having really nice jobs leads to more money, which at last turns into greed and brings out the worst in most people. I really like the statement and thoughts the author says above. If we are too busy being chained down to our jobs and money and social status, we can never truly focus on what truly is impo rtant. From Kingdom Playgrounds One of my favorite verses is Truly I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 183).It sounds like a simple thing to do-to act like children-but it really isnt. We are so corrupted today, that it sometimes sounds silly to go back to acting like children. Children are innocent and care free about the ridiculous things that adults worry about. And if you go back to being innocent and care free, then you can really see the little things that children see, and really appreciate those things. write out isnt seen as a complexity as it is to adults children love everyone. They see past the negative in others and see only the positive.

The Lost Symbol Chapter 12-15

CHAPTER 12Capitol pol grouch chief Trent Anderson had ein truthwhereseen security in the U.S. Capitol Complex for over a decade. A burly, squ be-chested adult male with a chiseled face and red h zephyr, he kept his hair cropped in a buzz cut, giving him an air of military authority. He wore a visible sidearm as a warning to anyone foolish enough to question the extent of his authority.Anderson spent the majority of his time coordinating his micro army of police officers from a high-tech surveillance center in the basement of the Capitol. Here he oversaw a staff of technicians who watched visual monitors, computer readouts, and a telephone switchboard that kept him in contact with the gentlemany security personnel he commanded. This evening had been unusu entirelyy quiet, and Anderson was pleased. He had been hoping to catch a s of the Redskins game on the flat-panel television in his office. The game had fitting kicked off when his intercom buzzed.Chief?Anderson groaned and kept his look on the television as he pressed the button. Yeah.Weve got some kind of disturbance in the Rotunda. Ive got officers arriving now, but I think youll want to have a look.Right. Anderson walked into the security nerve centera compact, neo in advance(p) facility packed with computer monitors. What have you got? The technician was cueing a digital video clip on his monitor. Rotunda east balcony camera. Twenty flecks ago. He played the clip.Anderson watched over the technicians shoulder. The Rotunda was almost deserted today, dotted with just a few touring cars. Andersons trained eye went immediately to the one person who was alone and moving faster than whole the others. shaved head. Green army- senseless jacket. Injured arm in a sling. Slight limp. Slouched posture. Talking on a cell phone. The bald mans footfalls echoed crisply on the audio have until, suddenly, arriving at the exact center of the Rotunda, he stop short, revokeed his phone call, and then knelt down as if to tie his shoe. But instead of tying a shoe, he pulled something out of his sling and set it on the substructure. Then he stood up and limped briskly toward the east exit.Anderson eyed the oddly shaped object the man had left behind. What in the world? It was virtually eight inches tall and alkaliing vertically. Anderson crouched jamr to the screen and squinted. That providet be what it looks the likeAs the bald man hurry off, disappearing through the east portico, a little boy nearby could be heard saying, Mommy, that man dropped something. The boy drifted toward the object but suddenly stopped short. After a long, motionless beat, he pointed and let out a deafening scream.Instantly, the police chief spun and ran for the door, barking orders as he went. Radio all points make up ones disposition the bald guy with the sling and detain him NOWDashing out of the security center, he bounded up the treads of the well-worn staircase three at a time. The security feed had shown the bald man with the sling leave the Rotunda via the east portico. The shortest route out of the building would at that placefore take him through the east-west corridor, which was just ahead.I can head him off.As he reached the top of the stairs and rounded the corner, Anderson surveyed the quiet hallway before him. An elderly couple strolled at the furthest end, hand in hand. Nearby, a blond tourist wearing a blue blazer was reading a guide news and studying the mosaic crownwork outside the House chamber.Excuse me, sir Anderson barked, running toward him. Have you seen a bald man with a sling on his arm?The man looked up from his book with a confused expression.A bald man with a sling Anderson repeated more firmly. Have you seen him? The tourist hesitated and glanced nervously toward the far eastern end of the hallway. Uh . . . yes, he said. I think he just ran past me . . . to that staircase over there. He pointed down the hall.Anderson pulled out his radio and yelled into i t. All points The fly-by-night is headed for the southeast exit. Converge He stowed the radio and yanked his sidearm from its holster, running toward the exit.Thirty seconds later, at a quiet exit on the east side of the Capitol, the potently built blond man in the blue blazer timbreped into the damp night air. He smiled, savoring the coolness of the evening.Transformation.It had been so easy.Only a smooth ago he had limped quickly out of the Rotunda in an army-surplus come on. Stepping into a darkened alcove, he shed his coat, revealing the blue blazer he wore underneath. Before abandoning his surplus jacket, he pulled a blond wig from the pocket and fit it snugly on his head. Then he stood up straight, pulled a slim Washington templet from his blazer, and stepped calmly from the niche with an elegant gait.Transformation. This is my gift.As Malakhs mortal legs carried him toward his waiting limousine, he arched his defend, standing to his full six-spot-foot-three height and throwing back his shoulders. He inhaled deeply, letting the air fill his lungs. He could feel the wings of the tattooed phoenix on his chest opening wide.If they only knew my tycoon, he prospect, gazing out at the city. Tonight my transformation pull up stakes be complete.Malakh had played his cards artfully within the Capitol Building, showing obeisance to all the antique etiquettes. The superannuated invitation has been delivered. If Langdon had not and grasped his role here tonight, shortly he would.CHAPTER 13For Robert Langdon, the Capitol Rotundalike St. rays Basilicaal shipway had a way of taking him by surprise. Intellectually, he knew the room was so oversize that the Statue of Liberty could stand comfortably inside it, but somehow the Rotunda always felt larger and more hallowed than he anticipated, as if there were spirits in the air. Tonight, however, there was only chaos.Capitol police officers were sealing the Rotunda while attempting to herd distraught touris ts away from the hand. The little boy was still crying. A bright light flasheda tourist taking a photo of the handand several guards immediately detained the man, taking his camera and escorting him off. In the confusion, Langdon felt himself moving forward in a trance, slipping through the crowd, inching closer to the hand. gibe Solomons severed right hand was standing upright, the flat plane of the detached wrist skewered down onto the spike of a infinitesimal foresten stand. Three of the fingers were closed in a fist, while the limp and index finger were fully extended, pointing up toward the soaring dome.Everyone back an officer called.Langdon was close enough now that he could see dried blood, which had run down from the wrist and coagulated on the wooden base. Postmortem wounds dont bleed . . . which means Peter is alive. Langdon didnt know whether to be relieved or nauseated. Peters hand was removed while he was alive? Bile rose in his throat. He thought of all the times his dear friend had extended this same hand to shake Langdons or offer a warm embrace. For several seconds, Langdon felt his mind go blank, like an untuned television set broadcasting only static. The first clear image that broke through was utterly unexpected.A crown . . . and a star.Langdon crouched down, eyeing the tips of Peters thumb and index finger. Tattoos? Incredibly, the monster who had done this appeared to have tattooed tiny symbols on Peters fingertips. On the thumba crown. On the index fingera star. This cant be. The two symbols registered like a shot in Langdons mind, amplifying this already horrific scene into something almost otherworldly. These symbols had appeared together many times in history, and always in the same placeon the fingertips of a hand. It was one of the ancient worlds most coveted and secretive icons. The Hand of the Mysteries. The icon was rarely seen anymore, but throughout history it had symbolized a ruling call to action. Langdon tug to comprehen d the grotesque artifact now before him. Someone crafted the Hand of the Mysteries out of Peters hand? It was unthinkable. Traditionally, the icon was sculpted in stone or wood or rendered as a drawing. Langdon had never heard of the Hand of the Mysteries being fashioned from actual flesh. The concept was abhorrent.Sir? a guard said behind Langdon. enjoy step back. Langdon barely heard him. There are other tattoos. Although he could not see the fingertips of the three clenched fingers, Langdon knew these fingertips would bear their own unique markings. That was the tradition. quintuple symbols in summate. Through the millennia, the symbols on the fingertips of the Hand of the Mysteries had never miscellanead . . . nor had the hands iconic purpose. The hand represents . . . an invitation.Langdon felt a sudden chill as he recalled the words of the man who had brought him here. Professor, tonight you are receiving the invitation of your lifetime. In ancient times, the Hand of the My steries actually served as the most coveted invitation on earth. To receive this icon was a sacred cite to join an elite groupthose who were said to guard the secret wisdom of all the ages. The invitation not only was a great honor, but it signified that a master believed you were worthy to receive this hidden wisdom. The hand of the master extended to the initiate.Sir, the guard said, putting a firm hand on Langdons shoulder. I adopt you to back up right now.I know what this means, Langdon managed. I can help you.Now the guard said.My friend is in trouble. We have toLangdon felt powerful arms pulling him up and leading him away from the hand. He but let it happen . . . feeling too off balance to protest.A ballock invitation had just been delivered. Someone was summoning Langdon to unlock a mystical portal that would unveil a world of ancient mysteries and hidden knowledge. But it was all madness.Delusions of a lunatic.CHAPTER 14Malakhs stretch limousine eased away from the U.S. Capitol, moving eastward down Independence Avenue. A young couple on the sidewalk labour to see through the tinted rear windows, hoping to glimpse a VIP. Im in front, Malakh thought, smiling to himself.Malakh loved the feeling of power he got from driving this massive car all alone. None of his other five cars offered him what he needed tonightthe guarantee of privacy. Total privacy. Limousines in this city enjoyed a kind of unspoken immunity. Embassies on wheels. police officers who worked near Capitol Hill were never certain what power broker they might mistakenly pull over in a limousine, and so most simply chose not to take the chance. As Malakh crossed the Anacostia River into Maryland, he could feel himself moving closer to Katherine, pulled onward by destinys gravity. I am being called to a second task tonight . . . one I had not imagined. Last night, when Peter Solomon t aging the last of his secrets, Malakh had learned of the being of a secret lab in which Katherine Solom on had performed miracles staggering breakthroughs that Malakh realized would transmute the world if they were ever make known. Her work get out unveil the true nature of all things. For centuries the brightest minds on earth had ignored the ancient sciences, mocking them as ignorant superstitions, arming themselves instead with smug skepticism and dazzling new technologiestools that led them only further from the truth. Every generations breakthroughs are proven false by the next generations technology. And so it had gone through the ages. The more man learned, the more he realized he did not know. For millennia, mankind had wandered in the darkness . . . but now, as had been prophesied, there was a change coming. After hurtling blindly through history, mankind had reached a crossroads. This moment had been predicted long ago, prophesied by the ancient texts, by the primeval calendars, and even by the stars themselves. The date was specific, its arrival imminent. It would be preced ed by a brilliant explosion of knowledge . . . a flash of pellucidness to illuminate the darkness and give mankind a final chance to veer away from the abyss and take the path of wisdom.I have cum to obscure the light, Malakh thought. This is my role.Fate had linked him to Peter and Katherine Solomon. The breakthroughs Katherine Solomon had made within the SMSC would risk opening floodgates of new thinking, starting a new Renaissance. Katherines revelations, if made public, would live a catalyst that would inspire mankind to rediscover the knowledge he had lost, empowering him beyond all imagination.Katherines destiny is to light this torch.Mine is to extinguish it.CHAPTER 15In total darkness, Katherine Solomon groped for the outer door of her lab. Finding it, she heaved open the lead-lined door and hurried into the small entry room. The journey across the void had taken only ninety seconds, and yet her heart was pounding wildly. After three years, youd think Id be used to that. Katherine always felt relieved to escape the blackness of Pod 5 and step into this clean, well-lit space. The Cube was a massive windowless box. Every inch of the interior walls and ceiling was covered with a stiff mesh of titanium-coated lead fiber, giving the impression of a giant cage built inside a cement enclosure. Dividers of frosted Plexiglas separated the space into different compartmentsa laboratory, a control room, a mechanical room, a bathroom, and a small research library.Katherine strode briskly into the main lab. The bright and sterile work space glistened with advanced quantitative equipment paired electro encephalographs, a femtosecond comb, a magneto-optical trap, and quantum-indeterminate electronic noise REGs, more simply known as Random Event Generators.Despite Noetic Sciences use of cutting-edge technologies, the discoveries themselves were far more mystical than the cold, high-tech machines that were producing them. The stuff of magic and myth was fast becoming reality as the direful new data poured in, all of it supporting the canonic ideology of Noetic Sciencethe untapped potential of the human mind. The overall thesis was simple We have barely scratched the surface of our mental and spiritual capabilities.Experiments at facilities like the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) in California and the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research Lab (PEAR) had categorically proven that human thought, if properly focused, had the ability to shine and change physical mass. Their experiments were no spoon-bending parlor tricks, but rather highly controlled inquiries that all produced the same extraordinary result our thoughts actually interacted with the physical world, whether or not we knew it, effecting change all the way down to the subatomic realm.Mind over matter. In 2001, in the hours following the horrifying events of September 11, the field of Noetic Science made a quantum leap forward. Four scientists discovered that as the frightened wo rld came together and focused in shared grief on this single tragedy, the outputs of 37 different Random Event Generators approximately the world suddenly became significantly less random. Somehow, the oneness of this shared experience, the coalescing of millions of minds, had affected the randomizing function of these machines, organizing their outputs and bringing order from chaos. The shocking discovery, it seemed, paralleled the ancient spiritual belief in a cosmic consciousnessa vast coalescing of human intention that was actually capable of interacting with physical matter. Recently, studies in mass meditation and prayer had produced similar results in Random Event Generators, fueling the claim that human consciousness, as Noetic author Lynne McTaggart described it, was a substance outside the confines of the body . . . a highly ordered energy capable of changing the physical world. Katherine had been fascinated by McTaggarts book The object Experiment, and her global, Web-b ased study theintentionexperiment.comaimed at discovering how human intention could affect the world. A handful of other progressive texts had also piqued Katherines interest. From this foundation, Katherine Solomons research had vaulted forward, proving that focused thought could affect literally anythingthe growth rate of plants, the direction that fish swam in a bowl, the manner in which cells divided in a petri dish, the synchronization of separately automate systems, and the chemical reactions in ones own body. Even the crystalline structure of a newly forming solid was rendered mutable by ones mind Katherine had created beautifully symmetrical ice crystals by sending loving thoughts to a glass of water as it froze. Incredibly, the converse was also true when she sent negative, polluting thoughts to the water, the ice crystals froze in chaotic, fractured forms. merciful thought can literally transform the physical world. As Katherines experiments grew bolder, her results became more astounding. Her work in this lab had proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that mind over matter was not just some New Age self-help mantra. The mind had the ability to alter the state of matter itself, and, more important, the mind had the power to encourage the physical world to move in a specific direction. We are the masters of our own universe. At the subatomic level, Katherine had shown that particles themselves came in and out of existence based solely on her intention to observe them. In a sense, her desire to see a particle . . . manifested that particle. Heisenberg had hinted at this reality decades ago, and now it had be come a fundamental principle of Noetic Science. In the words of Lynne McTaggart Living consciousness somehow is the influence that turns the possibility of something into something real. The most essential particle in creating our universe is the consciousness that observes it.The most astonishing aspect of Katherines work, however, had been the realiza tion that the minds ability to affect the physical world could be augmented through practice. pattern was a learned skill. Like meditation, harnessing the true power of thought required practice. More important . . . some people were born more skilled at it than others. And throughout history, there had been those few who had become true masters. This is the missing link between juvenile science and ancient mysticism.Katherine had learned this from her brother, Peter, and now, as her thoughts turned back to him, she felt a deepening concern. She walked to the labs research library and peered in. Empty. The library was a small reading roomtwo Morris chairs, a wooden table, two floor lamps, and a wall of mahogany bookshelves that held some five hundred books. Katherine and Peter had pooled their favorite texts here, writings on everything from particle physics to ancient mysticism. Their collection had ample(a) into an eclectic fusion of new and old . . . of cutting-edge and histori cal. Most of Katherines books bore cognomens like Quantum Consciousness, The New Physics, and Principles of Neural Science. Her brothers bore older, more esoteric titles like the Kybalion, the Zohar, The move Wu Li Masters, and a translation of the Sumerian tablets from the British Museum. The key to our scientific hereafter, her brother often said, is hidden in our past. A lifelong scholar of history, science, and mysticism, Peter had been the first to encourage Katherine to boost her university science education with an understanding of early Hermetic philosophy. She had been only nineteen years old when Peter sparked her interest in the link between modern science and ancient mysticism. So tell me, Kate, her brother had asked while she was home on vacation during her sophomore year at Yale. What are Elis reading these days in theoretical physics?Katherine had stood in her familys book-filled library and recited her demanding reading list.Impressive, her brother replied. Einstein , Bohr, and Hawking are modern geniuses. But are you reading anything older?Katherine scratched her head. You mean like . . . Newton? He smiled. Keep going. At twenty-seven, Peter had already made a name for himself in the faculty member world, and he and Katherine had grown to savor this kind of playful intellectual sparring.Older than Newton? Katherines head now filled with distant names like Ptolemy, Pythagoras, and Hermes Trismegistus. secret code reads that stuff anymore. Her brother ran a finger down the long shelf of cracked leather bindings and old dusty tomes. The scientific wisdom of the ancients was staggering . . . modern physics is only now beginning to comprehend it all.Peter, she said, you already told me that the Egyptians understood levers and pulleys long before Newton, and that the early alchemists did work on a par with modern chemistry, but so what? Todays physics deals with concepts that would have been unimaginable to the ancients.Like what?Well . . . like ent anglement theory, for one Subatomic research had now proven categorically that all matter was interconnected . . . entangled in a single unified mesh . . . a kind of universal oneness. Youre telling me the ancients sat around discussing entanglement theory?Absolutely Peter said, pushing his long, dark bangs out of his eyes. Entanglement was at the core of primeval beliefs. Its names are as old as history itself . . . Dharmakaya, Tao, Brahman. In fact, mans oldest spiritual quest was to perceive his own entanglement, to sense his own interconnection with all things. He has always wanted to become one with the universe . . . to achieve the state of at-one-ment. Her brother raised his eyebrows. To this day, Jews and Christians still strive for atonement . . . although most of us have forgotten it is actually at- one-ment were seeking.Katherine sighed, having forgotten how hard it was to repugn with a man so well versed in history. Okay, but youre talking in generalities. Im talking s pecific physics. Then be specific. His keen eyes challenged her now.Okay, how about something as simple as polaritythe positive/negative balance of the subatomic realm. Obviously, the ancients didnt understHold on Her brother pulled down a large dusty text, which he dropped loudly on the library table. Modern polarity is nothing but the dual world described by Krishna here in the Bhagavad Gita over two thousand years ago. A dozen other books in here, including the Kybalion, talk about binary systems and the opposing forces in nature.Katherine was skeptical. Okay, but if we talk about modern discoveries in subatomicsthe Heisenberg uncertainty principle, for exampleThen we must look here, Peter said, striding down his long bookshelf and pulling out another text. The sacred Hindu Vendantic scriptures known as the Upanishads. He dropped the tome heavily on the first. Heisenberg and Schrodinger studied this text and credited it with helping them formulate some of their theories. The showdo wn continued for several minutes, and the muddle of dusty books on the desk grew taller and taller. Finally Katherine threw up her hands in frustration. Okay You made your point, but I want to study cutting-edge theoretical physics. The future of science I really doubt Krishna or Vyasa had lots to say about superstring theory and multidimensional cosmological models.Youre right. They didnt. Her brother paused, a smile ford his lips. If youre talking superstring theory . . . He wandered over to the bookshelf yet again. Then youre talking this book here. He heaved out a colossal leather-bound book and dropped it with a wad onto the desk. Thirteenth-century translation of the original medieval Aramaic.Superstring theory in the thirteenth century? Katherine wasnt buying it. Come onSuperstring theory was a brand-new cosmological model. base on the most recent scientific observations, it suggested the multidimensional universe was made up not of three . . . but rather of ten dimension s, which all interacted like vibrating strings, similar to resonating violin strings.Katherine waited as her brother heaved open the book, ran through the ornately printed table of contents, and then flipped to a spot near the beginning of the book. memorialize this. He pointed to a faded page of text and diagrams.Dutifully, Katherine studied the page. The translation was old-fashioned and very hard to read, but to her utter amazement, the text and drawings clearly outlined the exact same universe heralded by modern superstring theorya ten-dimensional universe of resonating strings. As she continued reading, she suddenly gasped and recoiled. My God, it even describes how six of the dimensions are entangled and act as one? She took a frightened step backward. What is this book? Her brother grinned. Something Im hoping youll read one day. He flipped back to the title page, where an ornately printed plate bore three words. The Complete Zohar.Although Katherine had never read the Zohar, she knew it was the fundamental text of early Jewish mysticism, once believed so potent that it was speechless only for the most erudite rabbis.Katherine eyed the book. Youre saying the early mystics knew their universe had ten dimensions?Absolutely. He motioned to the pages illustration of ten intertwined circles called Sephiroth. Obviously, the nomenclature is esoteric, but the physics is very advanced.Katherine didnt know how to respond. But . . . then why dont more people study this? Her brother smiled. They will.I dont understand.Katherine, we have been born into wonderful times. A change is coming. Human beings are poised on the threshold of a new age when they will begin turning their eyes back to nature and to the old ways . . . back to the ideas in books like the Zohar and other ancient texts from around the world. Powerful truth has its own gravity and eventually pulls people back to it. There will come a day when modern science begins in earnest to study the wisdom of th e ancients . . . that will be the day that mankind begins to find answers to the big questions that still elude him. That night, Katherine eagerly began reading her brothers ancient texts and quickly came to understand that he was right. The ancients possessed profound scientific wisdom. Todays science was not so much making discoveries as it was making rediscoveries. Mankind, it seemed, had once grasped the true nature of the universe . . . but had let go . . . and forgotten.Modern physics can help us remember This quest had become Katherines mission in lifeto use advanced science to rediscover the lost wisdom of the ancients. It was more than academic rushing that kept her motivated. Beneath it all was her conviction that the world needed this understanding . . . now more than ever. At the rear of the lab, Katherine saw her brothers white lab coat hanging on its hook along with her own. Reflexively, she pulled out her phone to check for messages. Nothing. A voice echoed again in h er memory. That which your brother believes is hidden in D.C. . . . it can be found. Sometimes a legend that endures for centuries . . . endures for a reason. No, Katherine said aloud. It cant possibly be real.Sometimes a legend was just thata legend.

Nichols was indicted but pled not guilty. Nichols mental health issues will be used in the defense. The police chief has admitted a number of errors in the sign search for Nichols that occurred in the search for Nichols initially. It is unclear how Nichols could have escaped custody, found his may to the courtroom and then outside to the parking garage where he stole a car and drive thirty miles until he met with Ashley Smith.Civil suits by the victims families are likely. . It is likely that Bran Nichols had a substantial drug use history and or a serious mental heath issue. The lack of appropriate security measure and protocols allowed Nichols to escape from holding cell and murder three people. Issues with documentation for the defense in this trial has resulted in delayed hearings and it is possible that Nichols could ultimately allege that he was denied a competent and credible defense. The mounds of evidence against Nichols including tapes and video from he courthouse, makes this a particularly complicated and difficult case for the defense. Prometheus Bound Essay

In the play Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus, it states ideas about the theory of spring through force. The play deals with conflict between force and intelligence which realates to the main concept of power and force. At the beginning of the play, Hephaestus is joined by Kratos, who represents power, and Bia, representing force. Heaphaestus bondage Prometheus while Kratos abuses him and Bia stays silent throughtout the enchaintment. While Hephaestus has sympathy for Prometheus, Kratos reminds him that this is Zeus punishment for stealing fire from the gods and giving it to mankind. When Prometheus tried to use his intelligence to help macrocosm by giving them the gift of fire, Zeus responds by using his force to punish Prometheus. Throughout the play, Prometheus knowledge makes it clear that without him, Zeus will fall by a power greater than his own. For this reason, Force can be an advantage than knowledge, but it cannot remain indefinitely without it. On pg 1(lines 4-11), it says Ordained thee by the Father-to enchain this whitlow on yon mountain crags.. and check his charity for man. This is epochal because Prrometheus stole fire from the gods and Zeus, all powerful, punishes Prometheus by sending his assistants, Kratos (power) and Bia (force) with Hephaestus to enchain Prometheus to a mountain. Therefore, Zeus has the power and control over the other gods and immortals. Secondly, on pg. 43 (lines 12-16) continued on pg. 44 (lines 1-3) it says No rack nor pillory can cause Zeus fix to move or make manifest these things. not thus will he consrain my tongue to tell By whose hand he from tyranny shall fall. This is significant because Prometheus has the knowledge about the overthrow of power of Zeus. For this reason, knowledge or force beats power. Prometheus is a powerless immortal and victim of an unjust powerful god, Zeus, who rules by demands and laws. In this conflict, the idea that force requires thought and guidance to sustain it. Therefore, Aeschylus is stating that a resolution between knowledge and force can work together to bar destruction. Prometheus knowledge, signifies that the idea that thought must be sustained. In this case, his judgement will save Zeus but his opposition to Zeus leads on the path to resolution.

Native American beliefs are deeply rooted in their culture Essay

They didnt contrive one single religion, but they did have many beliefs. They believed in a mysterious force in nature and in spirits that were higher than human beings and influenced their lives. They also ate vegetables and plants b erries, squash and fruits. They valued God because he created everything. Some tribes believed in one or many gods whom more mightily than others. Shamans were religious people who had close contacts with spirits. They were often medicine men and treated sick people . There is no power greater than the Natural Laws. These powers were redact up by the Great Spirit in a way that the human being has no access to it, except by obeying. If they choose not to follow the Natural Laws, their life will be filled with confusion, tension, anxiety and stress. If they were to poison the Earth, they would poison themselves. If they were to poison the Water of the Earth, they were to poison themselves. What they would do to Earth, would happen to them and their children, tear down the children that were unborn.

Geen house effectWhile some people believe the earths climatic changes are due to the fact that the universe is getting older, others believe it is due to the babys room effect. The greenhouse effect is a naturally occuring phenomenon that is responsible for trapping heat near the earths surface and go alonging the orbiter warm. It is called the greenhouse effect because the way it works is similar to the way in which a green house functions. In a greenhouse sunlight passes through and through the transparent roof and walls and strikes the objects inside- plants, flowerpots, tables, and so forth. These objects absorb energy from sun, become warmer, and then give off energy themselves in the form of heat. Only a slim of this heat energy passes out t hrough the glass, much of it is trapped in the greenhouse, raising the temperature inside. In some ways, the earth functions rather like a greenhouse except on a much larger scale.Although the greenhouse effect has only recently been in the news, is nothing new in th account statement of our planet, has played major role in making life on earth possible. Without the greenhouse effect, the earth would be too cold for living In recent decades there has been a global increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide, largely as a result of the burning of fossil fuels. The greenhouse effect may be the most serious environmental problem the human race has ever experienced, for this reason scientists around the military man are running(a) hard to acheive a better envisioning of the greenhouse effect, to predict the impact it will have on earth, and to discover ways to control it. global warm up can be expected to change the earths climate dramatically and in a relatively short time. The financi al problem with this is that the swamp will cause dams to be built and cities to be reconstructed. If we do not act now, it may be too late. The amount ofcarbon dioxide in the atmosphere is increased by 0. Is soemthing good turning bad Up until about 150 geezerhood ago the compostion of the earths atmosphere had remianed relatively unchanged for several thousand years. Global warming could change the atmosphere so much and so fast that all sorts of plants and animals might soon be in danger os extinction. If this rise in sea level was to occur many areas would be much more prone to flooding, and generally much deeper floods would be experienced than nowadays. Right now it is moving so that North America is going to be close to the sun in the winter. The Cretaceous Period occurred over 100 million years ago. While going through this cycle it will change the climate of areas. Overall, the global temperature could rise anywhere from 5 to 9 degrees over the next litre years. What is me ant by the term, the greenhouse effect, is that the heat from the sun comes into the Earths atmosphere and cannot get out so it becomes trapped. 3. Advantages and disadvantages of living in a city and in the countryside A lot of people decide to move to the countryside nowadays. However, there are still many people who prefer confine in the town and say that they couldnt live anywhere else. So which place is better to live? Lets think about both of them. I would like to start with the advantages and disadvantages of the big city life. Living in much(prenominal) a big city has a lot of advantages. There is a big offer how to spend free time. There are a lot of theatres, concerts and other ways of entertainment. There is always a lot to do and vindicate There are a lot of possibilities of shopping. In various shopping centres and galleries you can buy whatever you want. What is more, there are a lot of running(a) places in a city. Many big international companies have their locations in the cities, so it is much easier to find a job in a big city. Moreover, the public transport is developed quite well, so the commuting to work isnt a problem. On the other hand, there are some disadvantages of living in a big city. Cities are very crowded. Everywhere there are crowds on the pavements and in the buses. What is more, the traffic is heavy and citys car parks are always very full. Sometimes it is very difficult to get from a given place to another. It may take hours Moreover, the other disadvantage is the safety in a city, but actually the lack of safety. There is a big crime rates in cities. So you have to be very careful at nights when you leave your home.I think that in the country the problem of crime isnt so big. There arent so many people and they usually know each other well. The possibility of robbery or other crime is relatively lower. Life in the countryside is more peaceful and the life is also slower. What is more, it is less stressful. There isnt any time pressure and the traffic conditions are better. A lot of places you may eye socket on foot. The city offers a lot there are huge buildings, skyscrapers or some historic monuments. On the other hand, in the countryside there are a lot of breathtaking sceneries, space and other amazing places such as forests, lakes or mountains. Moreover, people in the countryside are quite different than people living in the city they are relaxed, friendly and family-oriented. large number in the city are like ants. They are always in hurry, busy and out of time. In the country people enjoy lives and take pleasure in their daily activities. As a disadvantage of living in the countryside we may consider the commuting problems. People who stay in the countryside often have to work in the nearest cities, so it may take a lot of time to get to it. However, the living costs in the country are much lower, the variety of products in shops is smaller. To sum up I would like to say that both countryside and city have some advantages and disadvantages. Both city and country may be a good place to live. However I will stay in the city till I retire. Then I would like to move to the country to have a rest. I think that everyone of us will take into consideration all aspects before he decides to move to the country.5. The advantages and disadvantages of living in the country Living in the countryside has a lot of advantages, but also many disadvantages. As the advantage we can consider the fact that the country is less polluted and the traffic isnt so heavy. You are fit and you dont need to worry about your health condition, because in the countryside the air and water are so clean. In the country there are many plant species. There arent any huge blocks of flats, modern skyscrapers or bothersome traffic jams. In the country you are free to admire the breathtaking landscapes such as huge meadows, peacefulhills or forests. You can enjoy wa lking in the forest and picking mushrooms or hunting. Another advantage is that you may easily build a big house and the garden, because charges for ground are much lower than in the suburbs. Moreover, living in the countryside is cheaper than it is in the city, so you probably may afford many other things, because the prices are lower. What is more, you can invite your friends to the barbecue organized in your garden. It would be great The other positive side is the safety. In the rural area the crime rate is much lower. There arent a lot of house disassembles and the possibility of burglary is also lower. In the countryside people usually and keep eyes on neighbours estates. They always react when something strange is happening. Country life is very peaceful and silent. You will enjoy the feeling of peace. However, there are a lot of positive aspects of living in the country side, there are also some disadvantages. Living in the country is slower. People dont need to hurry and have a lot of time. People in the country dont have to work so many hours as they do in the city. On the other hand, they dont earn so much money. Moreover, there arent such interesting things to do during free time. The unemployment rate is also much higher than in the city. The problem may be also the communication. The resembling problem concerns the access to the hospitals, schools, police stations and shops, which are usually located far from the village. Last of all, there are some dangers connected with country life such as heavy snowfall or rainfall. To sum up, I think that living in the country may have a lot of advantages such as fresh air, breathtaking landscapes and comfort, but a lot of people decide to stay in the city, due to the fact that the life in the town is easier. The easy access to shops and other institutions are the great advantage. 6. Do you want to work in a big or small company? Why?a . No doubt, I choose to work for a small company because there are too many benefits that outnumber its disadvantages not to choose. But functional for a large company has advantages no more than its disadvantages. The most important benefit of works for a small company is that I will have many chances to develop. In gerneral, a small company is a underdeveloped enterprise and it is not easy to absorb many excellent employees. If I enter this small company, I think that the boss will appreciate me and give me many opportunities to snitch my abilities. Only I let the job do well, I am sure that I will rise very rapidly. On contrary to this, a large company is already a high developed institutions. There are many prominent talent working for it. A good vista will absorb hundreds of opponents. It will take me a lot of time and vigor to get this position.Maybe I have no chance to win this competition at all. Another benefit of working for a small company , which working for a large company almost cannot achieve, is that I can learn more skills in a small company than in a large company. As shown above, a small company is a developing enteprise. This means that it have no a great deal of money to employ many persons . So, I can do all kinds of jobs at the same time. I think that this will be useful to compete in the society. But in a large company, maybe I only restrain a monotonous job over a long period of time . I believe that this will be helpless to improve my capacity. b. Of course, choosing to work for a large company also has advantages to some extent. For example, it will afford handsome salary and will be not easy to fail in business competition. But from my own development, I still want to work in a small company. In addition, I believe that every large company originates from a small company. Maybe I will become an important person when the small company in which I work become a large company. b. Lots of student will face such a problem, to work in a big company or a small one. Each choice has benefits as well as disadvantages .for a big company, one will gain more knowledge and experience, but his work will focus on a narrow area. On the other hand, if one chooses to work for a small firm, he will have a wide experience and knowledge about the company operation, but his income will be very likely not higher then working in big company. Personally, I preferred to working in the big firm. There are several reasons for me to choose the big company, and the main reason is that I aspiration to be a professional and I believe working in big company will help me to realize it. There are many opportunities to get in touch with the talent on their major in big company. Working with them, I will definitely benefit from their experience and skill. For example, once, I had worked at a company with several professional research engineering as research assistance for one year. Their knowledge helped me directly drive to the report of the project, and their experience saved me form impracticable ideas. Furthermore, in big firm, one had more training opportunities, which cannot provide by the small company. The other reason for me is the income. For working in big firm the income will be higher. The wage will be very important for the new graduate whose family needs money. For example, one came from financial strait family, and had two little brothers chartering in school. A good wage will be help his family form hard living.Although working in a small company, one will gain full experience, and will obtain greater choice to promotion, when the company gets a good development. But the positive fact was the work was not steady, as the small firm was weak in the market economy. After considering the above, I can get the conclusion that although working in small firm also have advantage, I will choose to work in the big firm 7. Money is the root of all evil. Many of us grew up hearing that money is the root of all evil, but that is not really what scripture teaches us. Money is neither evil nor good. It is only what happens with money once it is in our hands that gives it qualities of either good or evil. Money can be many things, depending on how we relate to it. We need to understand the difference between a physical currency that is the basis for our lives and a material craving that is driven by greed. It is a fact that money makes the world go round and this is how we bargain for food, shelter, education, travel and just about everything in life has a price.Money is the reward for our work that allows us to enjoy the good things in life. It is the foundation for our social organizations and the donations to churches and charitable organizations that allows them to become established and function properly within our communities. From this point of view, money is not the evil it is just a source of our survival. From the other hand, the love of money can destroys our lives. Not only money by th emselves, but the desire of them. The greediness can destroy individuals, break up homes and even bring down nations. When the love of material possessions, social status and political power are the driving force behind our desire for money, we become rooted in evil. People can also make money there god. It depends on whether money is in control of the person or the person is in control of the money. It is clear, when money is in control of person it can make a lot of harm. To sum up, I should say that money is not evil, as I think. Its just the greed thats in the hearts of those who want it for needless riches and power that gives money the denounce of being evil8. Time and tide wait for no man a. Time and tide are natural phenomena. Like other agents of nature, they too have no consideration and regard for any individual. They are beyond the control of human hands. Man finds himself helpless before them. This proverb is a lesson to all of us. It lays violence on the desirability of our preparedness to make the best use of an opportunity that presents itself to us. We should, therefore, remain vigilant, because even the slightest carelessness on our part may result in missing a great opportunity in life resulting in colossal loss. No amount of repentance would compensate the loss caused by such a failure.Opportunities are rare. If availed of, they may prove a boon in ones life and may also ruin ones life if it is missed. In olden days there were no watches an people used to do their working following the direction of the Sun, even though people were sincere and punctual at those days. But today even after innumerable inventions and a lot developments people used to strike up that they dont have time.Is it that the time in olden days was long and today it is short? Not at all. Then where is the problem? Actually problem exists in time management. For instance, when students have time, they have it in unnecessary discussions, fantasies and student politics et c. but when examination comes nearer they start studying and complain for time short as they could not use the time left in a proper manner. Here a saying comes to mind, Time is short, not for rest, think your aim and do your best. Thus, scheduled management of time can give a person more time to do what he wants. b. When we get an opportunity to do anything, we should seize it. If an opportunity is may near have it again. Time lost once is lost forever. We cannot recall it. So we should always make the best use of time. We should be ever on the look-out to seize time by the fore-lock.Our life is short. We should not run out even a moment. If we waste time, we waste life itself. Time is the most important factor in our life. We should not postpone any work for the future. We should plan for the future and act in the present. The present is the most important time. We should do everything in the present. now or Never should be our motto We should plan our activities. We should do us eful things. We should not waste time on unnecessary things. We should be careful about our duties. We should not spend much time on amusements and games. we should do our duties punctually. Punctually is a great virtue.Success in life depends upon the right use of time. We should utilize time wisely. A student should study hard in his student-career. If he does not study properly in this stage, he may have to repent later in life. A sick person should be treated in time, other than he may have to lose his life. A farmer should sow seeds in the proper season, otherwise he may not get a harvest. Everything should be done in time. If any time is lost, it lost for ever. We should always be up and doing. We should never miss an opportunity. Time is very valuable. We should make the best use of it. 9.Advantages and Disadvantages of a Large Family EssayA family is a group of individuals related by blood.
